The Abe Thomas United Community Organization (ATUCO) traces its origins to 1998, when a group of Carson senior citizens formed a walking club known as the Dominguez Striders. The club was led by Jim Hall (deceased), who organized and coordinated activities for its members. Through their shared commitment to fellowship and community engagement, this group laid the foundation for what would eventually become ATUCO.
During the late 1990’s, several members of the Dominguez Striders, along with other individuals who were retired or nearing retirement, began regularly gathering at the “Supreme Donut Shop” in the City of Carson. Over time, Jim Hall continued to coordinate group activities, including lunches and casino trips. As these gatherings grew, the group eventually reached a consensus to formally establish an organization dedicated to giving back to the community.
The group was originally known as “The Carson Spots” and initially met at the Supreme Donut Shop. Gradually, their regular meeting location transitioned to Panera Bread and later to the Food Court inside the Carson Mall. As the group continued to grow and formalize its mission, members recognized the need for a name that reflected both their purpose and shared values. After thoughtful discussion, members voted to honor one of their most respected colleagues, Abraham (Abe) Thomas, by naming the organization after him. Thus, the necessary documentation was submitted and the organization was officially recognized as a California Non-Profit 501(c)(3) Corporation in February 2015.
• ATUCO members have donated funds to Carson-area youth in support of their academic and athletic endeavors.
